India: Rice exports gather pace w-o-w; West Africa drives demand

India's rice export programmes strengthened in early February, with vessel line-ups and dispatch data pointing to firmer shipments driven by West African demand and steady African buying interest. Total shipments for the week ended 13 February reached 137,700 tonnes (t), a sharp increase from 12,350 t in the previous week and broadly aligned with scheduled vessel movements across key east and west coast ports.

Weekly shipment momentum strengthens

Loadings were concentrated at Kakinada and Kandla, which together accounted for the bulk of the weekly volumes. Kakinada alone shipped 104,300 t during the week, reflecting active execution of previously contracted cargoes, particularly parboiled and white rice destined for Africa. Kandla contributed 25,400 t, while Dhamra handled 8,000 t of cargo. Kolkata recorded no movement during the period, and Vizag remained inactive.

The latest shipment data follows a volatile pattern through late January and early February. Weekly exports stood at 18,700 t in the week ended 23 January, surged to 206,500 t the following week on heavy Kandla dispatches, then eased to 12,350 t before rebounding again in mid-February.

Vessel line-up indicates Africa-led trade flows

The February vessel schedule underscores a clear Africa-centric trade pattern. Angola, Senegal, Guinea, and Somalia emerged as the primary destinations, reflecting sustained demand for bagged rice and parboiled varieties across the region.

Kakinada handled a diversified mix of parboiled and white rice. Louis Dreyfus Company India Pvt. Ltd. loaded both IR64 5% parboiled and 100% white rice cargoes to Dakar in Senegal, while Bebo Technologies Pvt. Ltd. executed multiple consignments to Benin, Senegal, and Guinea across parboiled and white rice grades. Reliance Industries Limited also shipped white rice to Senegal, and mixed-grade consignments to Conakry in Guinea were handled by Balaji Rice Company and Sree Lalitha Rice Industries.

At Dhamra, Bagadiya Traders Pvt. Ltd. shipped bagged rice to Bangladesh, highlighting continued regional trade alongside Africa-focused exports.

Product mix reflects demand for parboiled, white rice

The cargo composition shows strong demand for IR64 5% parboiled and 100% white rice, particularly for West African markets where price sensitivity and consumption patterns support steady offtake. Mixed consignments comprising 5% white rice, IR64 parboiled, and 20% broken rice shipped to Guinea indicate diversified procurement strategies among importers.

Bagged rice movements from Kandla also suggest stable retail-driven demand in Angola and Somalia, where distribution networks rely heavily on packaged cargo rather than bulk shipments.

Market direction supported by execution of prior contracts

The w-o-w rise in shipments appears to be driven more by execution of existing contracts than fresh buying. The sharp spike in late January and subsequent correction before the mid-February rebound indicate typical logistical phasing rather than a structural change in demand.

Still, the concentration of cargoes toward Senegal, Angola and Guinea signals that West Africa remains the key anchor market for Indian rice exporters. Stable freight execution and consistent vessel line-ups suggest exporters are clearing backlogs and maintaining shipment schedules amid steady overseas demand.

Overall, the February shipment pattern points to a firm near-term export pipeline, with east coast ports -- particularly Kakinada -- playing a pivotal role in dispatching parboiled and white rice cargoes, while Kandla continues to anchor bagged rice trade to African destinations.
