India: Jalna's new rail logistics infrastructure strengthens steel supply chain

  • TATA Steel rake supplies gain traction in Jalna.

  • Rail logistics enhance efficiency and procurement reliability.

Jalna, one of India's largest secondary steel hubs with an estimated TMT rebar production capacity of around 4.5 million tonnes per annum (mntpa), is increasingly sourcing high-grade sponge iron (FeM 80% and above) from TATA Steel through rail rakes. The trend has gained momentum following the recent commissioning of a railway siding in the Jalna industrial area, enabling efficient bulk movement of steel-related consignments across the country and supporting export logistics. These new logistics capabilities allow rapid loading and unloading of raw material rakes directly at the plant level, cutting down transportation costs and time.

Market participants note that the use of high-metallic sponge iron helps induction furnace-based steelmakers improve metallic yield, maintain consistent billet chemistry, and enhance finished rebar quality. Jalna producers typically operate with a metallic mix of around 80% scrap and 20% sponge iron, making the quality of sponge iron a key factor in overall production efficiency. However, during periods of tight scrap availability and elevated scrap prices, mills often increase the sponge iron share, shifting the mix to as much as 60% scrap and 40% high-grade sponge iron, to ensure stable production, optimize costs, and maintain product quality.

The availability of bulk quantities through rake movement ensures a steady and reliable supply of raw materials, reducing dependence on fragmented spot purchases and helping mills better manage procurement and inventory costs.

The shift comes as Jalna-based rebar manufacturers focus on optimizing conversion costs while catering to key consumption markets across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and southern India. The recently commissioned railway siding is expected to significantly enhance the cluster's logistics capabilities, enabling efficient dispatches to northern India and other distant markets.

Industry sources indicate that the preference for premium-grade sponge iron is likely to continue in the near term, driven by the need for operational efficiency. Stable rail connectivity and assured supply from integrated steelmakers are expected to remain key drivers shaping procurement strategies within the Jalna steel cluster.
