India: ECL to auction over 800,000 t of non-coking coal on 24 Jun'26

  • 95% of volumes on offer from Rajmahal region

  • Limited volumes of G4 on offer from Raniganj

Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) will offer around 829,500 t of non-coking coal through its e-auction scheduled for 24 June 2026. The offer basket is heavily concentrated in the Rajmahal coalfield region, with Rajmahal OC and Hura C OC accounting for nearly 800,000 t, or about 95% of the total volume on offer.

Rajmahal OC leads with 600,000 t

Rajmahal OC is the largest contributor in the auction, offering a total of 600,000 t through road mode. The mine will make available 500,000 t of G13 ROM coal and 100,000 t of G11 steam coal, making it the key source in the upcoming sale.

Hura C OC follows with 200,000 t through road mode, comprising 100,000 t of G12 ROM coal and 100,000 t of G11 steam coal. Together, the two mines dominate the lower-grade coal offerings in the auction.

Raniganj region offers premium grades

In the Raniganj coalfield, Tilaboni UG will offer 10,000 t of G4 steam coal through road mode and an additional 4,000 t through rail mode, taking its total offering to 14,000 t.

Bankola UG cluster will offer 2,000 t of G4 steam coal through road mode and 4,000 t through rail mode, aggregating to 6,000 t. The cluster includes supplies from Bankola UG, Kumardihi A UG, Khandra UG, and Shyamsundarpur UG.

Kunustoria UG will offer 3,500 t of G4 steam coal through road mode, catering primarily to road-based consumers.

Gourangdih OC offers W05 coal

Gourangdih OC will make available 2,000 t of W05 steam coal through road mode and 4,000 t through rail mode, resulting in a total offer of 6,000 t.

Road dispatches account for bulk volumes

Road mode continues to dominate the auction basket, particularly for Rajmahal OC and Hura C OC. Rail-linked volumes are limited to select G4 and W05 steam coal sources from Tilaboni UG, Bankola UG, and Gourangdih OC, providing evacuation flexibility for bulk consumers.

Outlook

The auction comes at a time when domestic coal markets are witnessing cautious procurement activity amid comfortable inventory levels and the onset of the monsoon season. Market participants are expected to closely track bidding interest, particularly for the sizeable Rajmahal-origin ROM coal volumes, which are likely to influence overall auction performance.
