India: ECL to auction 112,500 t of coal across G3-G5, W04 grades

  • G4 coal dominates auction basket with 62,500 t

  • Notified price of premium G3 coal kept at INR 3,719/t

Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd (CIL), will auction 112,500 tonnes (t) of coal under the CIL e-auction scheme on 3 July 2026. The basket comprises steam coal across G3, G4, and G5 grades and W04 washery coal, with the majority of the offered quantity available through road mode, while select parcels will be dispatched through rail.

G4 coal dominates auction basket

G4 steam coal accounts for the largest share of the auction, with 62,500 t. Bankola G emerged as the single largest contributor, offering 34,000 t, comprising 30,000 t through road from Nakrakonda OC and 4,000 t through rail via POCP II.

Bankola E has also offered 7,000 t through road mode.

In addition, Pandaveswar A has placed 12,500 t of G4 coal, including 8,500 t from Khottadih UG through road mode and 4,000 t through rail via SSAP. Jhanjra A contributes another 9,000 t, comprising 5,000 t through road from Jhanjra UG (MIC) and 4,000 t through rail from PAWI POCP-I, POCP-II, and SSAP. The notified price for all G4 coal stands at INR 3,557/t.

G3 coal offered from SP Mines A and Kajora B

Premium G3 steam coal totals 22,000 t in the auction. SP Mines A has offered 19,000 t, including 15,000 t through road from Chitra OC and 4,000 t through rail via JMT/CCSJ and UKA-II-MSPE loading points.

Meanwhile, Kajora B has offered 3,000 t of G3 coal from Khas Kajora UG through road mode. The cluster also includes supplies from Parascole East, Parascole West, Central Kajora UG and Jambad UG. The notified price for G3 coal is INR 3,719/t, the highest among all grades offered.

W04 coal led by Mugma B

W04 steam coal is largely represented by the Mugma B cluster, which has offered 24,000 t, making it one of the largest individual offerings in the auction. The basket includes 20,000 t through road from Chapapur (II) OCP (Hired) and 4,000 t through rail via MMU IIIA/PCMS. The cluster also sources coal from Rajpura OC, Nirsha OC, and Lakhimata UG. The notified price for W04 coal is INR 2,890/t.

G5 coal available in limited quantity

The auction also includes a limited quantity of G5 steam coal, primarily from the Mugma B cluster and Bejdih UG. The notified price for G5 coal is INR 3,275/t.

Road mode remains the preferred dispatch route

Road mode accounts for the majority of the 112,500 t offered, while rail-linked parcels are available through loading points including POCP II, SSAP, PAWI POCP-I, UKA-II-MSPE, JMT/CCSJ, and MMU IIIA/PCMS.

Overall, the auction offers a diversified mix of steam coal grades, with notified prices ranging from INR 2,890/t to INR 3,719/t, providing procurement opportunities for industrial consumers ahead of the monsoon season.
