Russia: MMK Heads Near to Commissioning of Sinter Plant

Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) expected to soon complete second stage of sinter plant commissioning at the construction site of sinter plant No. 5. The sinter machine was launched at the sinter plant 5 towards Apr'19 and has a capacity of 5.5 MnT p.a. The first stage of the sinter plant was commissioned in April 2019.

MMK's sinter plant will lead upgrades to the first processing stage. The company has begun with construction of new coke battery which will replace three existing once. It also plans to construct new blast furnace which will replace the three existing once.

The purpose of sinter plant is to improve the quality of raw material feed to the blast furnace, reduce coke consumption and environmental impact. It is also aimed at reducing cost of producing pig iron by around USD 8/MT.

MMK is one of the world's largest steel producers and a leading Russian metals company. The company includes wide range of operations from preparation of iron ore to downstream processing of rolled steel. In CY18, the total crude steel production recorded at 12.7 MnT and commercial steel products witnessed at 11.7 MnT.
