Mongolia: Coal exports climb up by over 20% m-o-m in Apr'25

  • Bituminous, anthracite coal exports surge 26-30%

  • Average coal export tags fall 9% m-o-m in Apr'25

Mysteel Global: Mongolian exports of coal, comprising anthracite, bituminous coal, and other coal and lignite, amounted to 7.43 million tonnes (mnt) in April, presenting increases of 23.7% m-o-m and 7.8% y-o-y, according to new data released by the country's Customs General Administration.

Total export value of its coal and lignite also climbed up in tandem. The data show that Mongolia reaped a revenue of $494.28 million from coal and lignite exports in April, up by 13% from March.

However, average export prices of both commodities presented continuous downtrends last month. The average price of Mongolia's lignite exports in April was recorded at $31.8/tonne (t), dropping 16.1% m-o-m from last month's $37.9/t. Meanwhile, the average price of Mongolia's coal exports also dipped by 9.1% m-o-m to $68.8/t, extending its consistent fall since last May, Mysteel Global calculated based on customs data.

Faltering export prices mainly reflected dull interest in procuring Mongolian coal, mainly coking coal for steelmaking purposes, among Chinese buyers - the sole takers of Monglia's coal products this year as of April, Mysteel Global notes.

In April, the sale of Mongolian coal in the Chinese market remained sluggish, which weighed consistently on its export prices. Additionally, although China's output of hot metal hovered high during April, the cautious attitude towards feedstock procurement among Chinese steel mills continued lulling transactions of Mongolian coking coal.

Despite the slowdown, Mongolia's exports of all coal types in April recorded upticks.

Exports of bituminous coal, including types used for making steel and generating electricity, sat at 6.62 mnt in April, up 26.1% m-o-m, Mysteel Global calculated based on Mongolia's customs data.

Mongolia's anthracite exports last month saw the steepest spike of 30% from March to amount to 31,468 t. Besides, exports for other coal also swelled by 16.5% m-o-m to 321,317 t.

As for lignite, its exports inched up a marginal 0.2% from the previous month to 459,001 t in April.

Over January-April this year, Mongolia's cumulative coal and lignite exports amounted to 24.96 mnt, down slightly by 0.25% from the same period last year.
