Japan: Nippon Steel raises seamless stainless pipe prices by over 10% on cost pressure

  • Alloy cost surge drives first hike in two years

  • Further hikes possible amid geopolitical risks

Japan Metal Daily: Nippon Steel has announced a price increase of more than 10% for seamless stainless steel pipes, effective from May 2026 contracts, marking its first revision in over two years. The hike applies across all product categories, including distribution (store) sales, as the company moves to restore margins amid rising input and operating costs.

Cost pressures necessitate price revision

The price hike is primarily driven by a sharp increase in alloy raw materials such as nickel and chromium, alongside elevated logistics and labour costs. Market participants noted that sustained cost inflation across the value chain has compressed producer margins, prompting mills to pass on the burden through higher realisations.

Demand resilience supports price pass-through

Despite cost pressures, underlying demand remains stable, particularly from semiconductor and petrochemical sectors. Strong order flows from semiconductor-related facilities have provided mills with sufficient pricing leverage to implement the increase without significant resistance from buyers.

Production footprint and supply dynamics

Nippon Steel manufactures seamless stainless steel pipes at its Kansai Steel Works (Amagasaki) and Yamaguchi Steel Works (Hikari), catering to high-end industrial applications. The company aims to stabilise profitability by aligning selling prices with rising production costs.

Outlook

The stainless steel pipe market is expected to remain firm in the near term, supported by resilient industrial demand and elevated alloy costs. With geopolitical tensions in the Middle East potentially driving further increases in raw material and freight costs, additional price hikes cannot be ruled out if cost pressures persist.
