Iron ore freights under pressure across key routes; Australia holds firm
...
- Supramax market under pressure amid shrinking cargo enquiries
- Capesize sentiment mixed as Pacific strength offsets Atlantic softness
Dry bulk iron ore freight sentiment reflected diverse trend w-o-w between the Pacific and Atlantic basins. The Pacific market remaining comparatively firm on steady miner-led fixing activity and stable cargo movement, while the Atlantic basin witnessed softer sentiment due to limited cargo enquiries, cautious chartering interest, and easing bunker prices. Overall, demand remained uneven across regions, keeping the broader Capesize market volatile.
The Supramax iron ore freight market remained under slight pressure this week amid subdued export activity and cautious sentiment among market participants. Cargo enquiries continued to shrink as several charterers delayed fresh bookings in anticipation of softer freight levels, resulting in limited trading momentum across the segment.
A shipbroker stated, "Enquiries are shrinking, with not all exporters actively participating in the market as many are waiting for freight rates to soften further. Even regular players have scaled down their export activity amid the current market conditions."
"Capesize sentiment remained firm, while the Panamax market showed slight softness. Supramax rates were largely stable with a marginal softer tone, whereas the Handy segment remained flat amid balanced demand and vessel supply," another shipbroker mentioned.
Route-wise update

A source informed BigMint: "There may be scope to reduce the rate by around $1-2/t during fixture negotiations. However, current levels are largely market-driven and remain broadly aligned with the actual voyage cost estimations."
Outlook
In the near term, iron ore freight market sentiment of Supramax is expected to remain cautiously stable amid balanced vessel availability and selective minor bulk cargo demand, while the Capesize market may continue to witness volatility driven by fluctuating iron ore cargo activity across the Pacific and Atlantic basins.
