In addition to the existing steel plants at Rourkela of SAIL, Kalinga Nagar of NINL and MESCO the State Government has signed 49 MoUs with national & international steel companies for establishment of new steel plants in the State. Out of which 35 steel plants having installed capacity of 20.96 MnT pa is already operational.

10 projects of steel units are under project implemenation stage which have MoU capacity of 12.83 MnT pa and projects of 4 steel plants having their MoU signed have been withdrawn.

35 MoU signed steel plants in Odisha achieved steel production of 10.172 MnT in FY17 against 6.799 MnT registering growth of 49.6% Y-o-Y.

Bhushan Steel remained the largest producer with steel output of 3.297 MnT in FY17 and 0.911 MnT in Q1 FY18. Tata Steel has considerably increased steel output to 1.781 MnT in FY17 and 0.623 MnT in Q1 FY18. Other major steel producers in the state are Bhushan Power & Steel, Jindal Steel & Power , Jindal Stainless and Adhunik Metaliks.

Sponge iron production in the state was recorded at 6.209 MnT in FY17, up 6.81% Y-o-Y. Odisha's pellet production was recorded at 14.702 MnT in FY17 compared to 9.9 MnT in FY16.
