India: Jeera arrivals ease but weak export demand caps price upside

  • Lower arrivals fail to lift prices as overall exports remains slow

  • Adequate supply, cautious trader positioning keep market rangebound

Arrivals decline, supply remains comfortable
Jeera arrivals across Gujarat mandis eased to around 35,000-40,000 bags on 20 April 2026, compared with higher inflows last week. Unjha reported 25,000-27,000 bags, while Rajkot, Gondal, and other Saurashtra centres saw steady arrivals. Despite the decline, overall supply remains comfortable due to continuous mandi inflows and sufficient pipeline stocks with traders and stockists.

Prices steady with limited directional cues
Spot prices in Unjha were quoted at INR 19,750-23,750 per quintal, while Gondal traded at INR 19,500-22,200 per quintal. NCDEX May futures hovered near INR 21,900, indicating lack of aggressive fresh positions. The narrow spot-futures spread reflects a balanced market without strong bullish or bearish triggers.

Sluggish exports weigh on market sentiment
The key pressure point remains weak overall export demand from India, with exporters reporting slower enquiry flows and limited bulk buying at current price levels. Competitive pricing in global markets and cautious overseas buyers are restricting trade volumes. Domestic demand from the masala spice industry remains routine and is not strong enough to absorb the available supply.

Trader activity remains cautious amid demand uncertainty
Traders and exporters are maintaining a cautious stance, avoiding large inventory build-up due to uncertain export visibility. At the same time, farmers are releasing stocks gradually at prevailing prices, ensuring steady arrivals without triggering distress selling.

Consolidation likely unless export demand improves
The jeera market is expected to remain rangebound in the near term, with adequate supply and subdued demand. Any meaningful upside will depend on improvement in overall export offtake or stronger bulk buying from the masala spice industry. Until then, prices are likely to trade within the current band.
