India: ISSDA calls for anti-dumping duty to protect stainless steel industry

The Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) will soon petition the Commerce Ministry for anti-dumping duties on stainless steel imports from China, Vietnam, and other countries. With imports reaching 1.73 million tonnes (mnt) in FY'25, domestic producers are struggling against sharply underpriced foreign steel flooding the market.

Domestic producers are struggling to compete with these sharply underpriced, often subsidised imports, which are flooding the market at throwaway prices and undermining local manufacturers, especially MSMEs.

ISSDA points out that many of these imports are routed through ASEAN countries to circumvent existing tariffs, further eroding the competitiveness of Indian producers and threatening the "Make in India" initiative.

The association is urging the government to implement stronger trade remedies-including anti-dumping, countervailing, and safeguard duties-to address these circumvention tactics and restore a level playing field

Industry leaders warn that without decisive action, India risks becoming a dumping ground for surplus global steel, jeopardizing jobs, investments, and the long-term growth of the domestic stainless steel sector.
