According to the Joint Plant Committee (JPC), India's finished steel imports dropped by 8.1% in March 2025 to 0.557 million tonnes (mnt) compared to 0.606 mnt in February 2025. This marks a 2.5% decrease from 0.571 mnt recorded in March 2024.
In FY'25, finished steel imports rose by 14.6% to 9.532 mnt compared to 8.320 mnt in the same period last year.
Finished steel exports increase by 10.5% m-o-m
India's finished steel exports rose 10.5% to 0.453 mnt in March 2025 from 0.410 mnt in the previous month. However, this marks a fall of 46.2% from 0.842 mnt in March 2024.
Exports declined by 35.1% in FY'25 to 4.858 mnt, compared to 7.487 mnt during the year-ago period.
Crude steel production edges up by 2.1% m-o-m
Crude steel production inched up by 2.1% in March 2025 to 12.926 mnt from 12.662 mnt in the previous month. However, on a y-o-y basis, volumes remained stable.
In FY'25, crude steel output increased by 4.7% to 151.141 mnt, compared to 144.299 mnt in the previous year.
Finished steel production inches up by 0.7% m-o-m
India's finished steel production increased marginally by 0.7% in March 2025 to 12.416 mnt compared to 12.332 mnt in February 2025. However, on a y-o-y basis, output edged down by 1.3% from 12.584 mnt in March 2024.
Finished steel production grew 4.4% in FY'25 to 145.309 mnt from 139.151 mnt during the previous year.
Finished steel consumption rises 0.6% m-o-m
In March 2025, finished steel consumption in India inched up by 0.6% m-o-m to 12.417 mnt from 12.342 mnt in February 2025. However, consumption declined by 0.5% from 12.485 mnt in March 2024.
Finished steel consumption in FY'25 climbed up by 10.2% to 150.234 mnt from 136.289 mnt recorded during the previous year.
