Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) held two auctions this month, on 1 and 10 September 2025, cumulatively selling 225,700 tonnes (t) of non-coking coal across multiple grades. The results highlighted strong bidding for G4, G5, and G12 grades, with industrial buyers and traders actively participating to secure volumes.
ECL has scheduled its next auction on 23 September 2025, offering 200,700 t of non-coking coal across grades G3, G4, G5, G6, G12, and WIII.
1 September auction
The 1 September auction recorded sales of 67,050 t, with G4 emerging as the most traded grade at 33,100 t, averaging INR 5,041/t. Other key grades included G9 (13,100 t at INR 1,772/t), G5 (8,300 t at INR 4,229/t), G12 (7,550 t at INR 2,068/t), and G3 (5,000 t at INR 6,721/t). Notable buyers included Compact Weighing Pvt Ltd (8,000 t of G9), S.S. Enterprises (4,000 t of G4 and G5), and Khemka Minerals Pvt Ltd (3,950 t of G4). Supply sources ranged from Kumardihi B UG and Khottadih OC mines to Rajmahal OC and Jambad UG, reflecting broad participation across both OC and UG projects.
10 September auction
The 10 September event was larger, offering and booking 158,650 t. G4 again dominated with 112,500 t transacted at INR 4,680/t, followed by G12 at 33,350 t (INR 2,068/t). Smaller volumes of G5 (4,550 t), G6 (1,350 t), and G11 (6,900 t) also changed hands. Prominent buyers included Adani Power Ltd (25,000 t of G12 at INR 2,068/t) and Shivoy Infratech Pvt Ltd (10,000 t of G4 at INR 4,437/t). Supplies were spread across key collieries, with Sonepur Bazari OC contributing the highest at 65,200 t of G4 coal. Other notable sources were Rajmahal OC, Jhanjra UG, and Chitra OC.
The average prices reflect bid values, exclusive of taxes, duties, and levies.
Market insight
The September results confirm steady demand for G4 coal and balanced procurement by power and industrial users. Upcoming auctions are likely to keep buyer activity firm, with premiums centred on mid-grade coal.
