Germany: SSAB partners with Heidelberg Materials to develop EAF slag use

  • SSAB partners Heidelberg to develop EAF slag use

  • Focus on developing EAF slag for construction materials

Japan Metal Daily: Nordic steel maker SSAB has entered into a collaboration with Germany-based Heidelberg Materials to develop the use of electric arc furnace (EAF) slag as a cement substitute, with financial backing of SEK 20 million from the Swedish government. The move supports efforts to enhance circularity and reduce industrial waste.

This initiative aligns with SSAB's broader transition from blast furnace to EAF-based steelmaking, beginning with the Oxelosund plant and with further conversions planned at Lulea and its Finland operations. The shift is part of the company's long-term decarbonisation strategy.

Unlike blast furnace slag, EAF slag has limited established applications, making its utilisation more challenging. The joint development aims to unlock its potential in construction materials, supporting both sustainability goals and efficient resource use.
