United States: Ferrous Scrap Exports Up 53% Y-o-Y in Jul’17

USA - world’s second largest exporter of ferrous scrap after EU-28 (Europe) has witnessed a significant growth in its ferrous scrap exports by 53% Y-o-Y in Jul’17 against 0.81 MnT exports in Jul’16.
As per recent customs data, United States registered 1.24 MnT ferrous scrap exports in Jul’17.In monthly comparison, ferrous scrap exports noted a marginal fall of 2% M-o-M as it was 1.26 MnT exports in Jun’17.
However, during the first seven months of CY17 (Jan-Jul’17), United States has exported 7.72 MnT ferrous scrap showing a hike of 22% against 6.35 MnT exports during the same period of last year (Jan-Jul’16.)
Top loading ports in the US for scrap shipping activities were Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Boston.
Turkey remain top importer of US ferrous scrap in Jul'17 -
US continued to supply the highest share of ferrous scrap exports to Turkey (0.30 MnT) again in Jul’17 followed by other major exporters like Mexico (0.18 MnT), Taiwan (0.10 MnT), Bangladesh (0.10 MnT), Canada (0.08 MnT) Pakistan (0.07 MnT), and India (0.07 MnT) in Jul’17.

During CY17, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have raised bulk ferrous scrap imports from US. India and Pakistan both imported 0.07 MnT scrap from US in Jul’17.While Bangladesh imported 0.10 MnT ferrous scrap in Jul’17.

Ferrous scrap imports to US down 28% M-o-M in Jul’17 -
Ferrous scrap imports in US stood at 0.31 MnT in Jul’17, down 28% M-o-M against 0.43 MnT imports in Jun’17. On yearly basis, imports have declined 18% Y-o-Y against 0.38 MnT in Jun’16.During the first seven months of CY17, total Imports of ferrous scrap in the country noted at 2.67 MnT, up 20% against 2.23 MnT during Jan-Jul’16.
In Jul’17, Canada supplied highest, 0.21 MnT ferrous scrap exports to US followed by Sweden (0.03 MnT), Netherland (0.03 MnT), Mexico (0.02 MnT) and Spain (0.02 MnT) respectively.
Top unloading ports in US for scrap import activities were Detroit, New Orleans, Seattle, Charleston, and Buffalo.
