SAIL Supplies Steel to Asia’s Second Largest Road-cum-Rail Bridge over Brahmaputra River

India’s leading steel producer, SAIL (Steel Authority of India Ltd) said on Monday that it has supplied a little over 50% of steel requirement for Bogibeel Bridge construction over the Brahmaputra river in the northeastern Indian state of Assam between Dhemaji and Dibrugarh district.

The company has supplied 35,400 tonnes of steel for the road-cum-rail bridge construction which is likely to be opened tomorrow i.e. in 25 Dec’18.

SAIL has supplied TMT rebar, plates and structural for this 4.94-km long bridge, which has composite welded steel truss girders in its structures. The bridge is the second-largest road-cum-rail bridge in Asia with three-lane roads on top and a double-line railway track below. Bogibeel is part of infrastructure projects planned by India to improve logistics along the border in Arunachal Pradesh.

The total investment involved in the construction of the bridge is about INR 5,900 crore and it is likely to reduce travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh to four hours and will cut out the detour of over 170 km via Tinsukia.

SAIL’s contribution to various government-infrastructure projects

SAIL has been providing steel for various infrastructure projects including road & highways, bridges, hydropower projects, rail & road tunnels, metro lines, etc. Some of the notable projects are: In December last year it has supplied about 70% of steel approximately 5,000 metric tonnes of plates, structural and TMTs for Mizoram's biggest power project -- Tuirial Hydro Electric Power project.

In May’18, it has supplied 10,500-tonne steel for the 330 Megawatts (MW) Kishanganga Hydroelectric Power Project in Bandipora District of Jammu and Kashmir, 43,000 tonnes of steel for the 135-km long Eastern Peripheral Highway and about 60,000 tonnes steel for 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal broad gauge railway project in Manipur.

On 13 December 2018, SAIL has clocked its best ever hot metal production in a single day at 55,282 tonnes. The PSU is ramping up production from its new units and is focussed on operating at its rated capacity after the commissioning of all its new blast furnaces at three of its integrated steel plants " Durga, Rourkela Steel Plant, Kalyani, IISCO steel plant and Mahamaya, Bhilai steel plant.
