India: Govt imposes anti-dumping measures on electro-galvanised steel sheet imports

The Indian government has imposed anti-dumping (AD) measures on imported electro-galvanised steel sheets (EG) from countries such as South Korea, Singapore and Japan. Japanese EG sheets will be subjected to an AD tax of $64.08*, but steel will be exempt from the tax as a result of the investigation.

Last week, the Ministry of Finance announced that they would approve and activate the Ministry of Industry and Trade's proposal after they reached a final determination on whether there was risk of damage.

There has been an increase in the number of cases and, therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade proposed the imposition of anti-dumping measures. However, the Ministry of Finance rejected them and did not implement them. However, some cases were brought to court which were against the Ministry of Finance's decision.

In September, a judgement was issued ordering the Ministry of Finance to clarify the reasons and reinvestigate on the proposal of anti-dumping measures against stainless steel sheets from Japan.

Japan's EG sheet exports to India stood at 67,000 tonnes (t) in CY'21, which accounted for less than 10% of overall EG sheet exports. Moreover, imports of EG sheets are likely to remain under pressure due to high AD tax, expect for Nippon Steel, which is exempt from taxation.

For other countries like South Korea and Singapore, AD tariff of $16.05* and $79.73* respectively will be imposed.
