India's alloy steel sector stands at a defining inflection point. With demand projected to grow at 6–8% annually through 2030 - nearly four times the global average of 1.7% - the industry is entering a decade of transformation that will reshape India's industrial capacity and global competitiveness.
India already accounts for roughly 7–8% of global alloy steel production, and demand is forecast to reach 10.6 million tonnes by 2030. Underpinning this growth is a structural shift in end-use: automotive accounts for about 53% of consumption today, but non-automotive demand - infrastructure, defence, energy, railways, and capital equipment - is accelerating fast and set to rebalance the mix over the coming years.
The opportunity carries clear imperatives. India must raise production quality to global standards, reduce its dependence on imports (currently 1.27 million tonnes of alloy steel and components every year), build resilient raw-material and supply chains, and accelerate the shift toward green, sustainable steelmaking.
The India Alloy Steel and Special Steel Summit 2026 convenes alloy steel producers, raw-material suppliers, end-user industries, technology providers, policymakers, and financial stakeholders to shape the roadmap for this growth and to position India as a global leader in high-quality, sustainable alloy steel through 2030 and beyond.
Alloy steel consumption rose 22% y-o-y to 10.60 mnt in FY'26, while domestic production increased 29% y-o-y to 9.70 mnt. Despite higher output, consumption continued to outpace production, highlighting a persistent demand-supply gap and dependence on imports for specialised grades.
India's speciality steel sector faces both opportunities and challenges. The country imports 1.27 mnt annually, including alloy bars, alloy wire rods (WR), and finished goods (FG) components such as steering rods, crankshafts, and bearings. While this dependency is a vulnerability, it also presents a major opportunity as global supply chains shift away from China, which produces 63% of global stainless steel.

IASSS 2026 is built around five strategic pillars that capture both the immediate priorities and the long-term imperatives of India's alloy steel industry:
1. Market Outlook 2030
Demand–supply forecasts, capacity expansion, pricing outlook, and India's trajectory within the global alloy steel landscape.
2. Sectoral Demand Deep-Dives
Automotive (ICE and EV), railways, defence, aerospace, energy, and industrial equipment — mapping where growth will come from and what it will demand of producers.
3. Raw Materials & Cost Competitiveness
Iron ore, coking coal, ferroalloys, and scrap — navigating global supply disruptions, securing quality, and building resilient procurement strategies.
4. Green Steel & Sustainability
Decarbonisation pathways, energy transition, CBAM implications, certification, and the economics of sustainable alloy steel production.
5. Localisation, Exports & Atmanirbhar Bharat
Import substitution, export-market development, global competitiveness benchmarking, and alignment with India's self-reliance mission across defence, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
