About the Conference:
Steel Production and utilization serve as vital benchmarks of a nation’s economic development, given its role as both an intermediary and raw material in various industries. India is the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel, with an output of 143.6 million tonnes (MT) of crude steel and finished steel production of 138.5 million tonnes (MT). The Indian government has announced a variety of policy initiatives over the years to promote the development of the domestic steel industry due to which steel and its associated mining and metallurgy sectors have seen major investments and developments in the recent past.
The National Steel Policy 2017 foresee 300 million tonnes of production capacity in 2030-31. Per capita consumption of steel has risen from 57.6 kgs to 74.1 kgs in the last five years. The government has a specific goal of raising rural consumption of steel from present 19.6 kg/per capita to 38 kg/per capita by 2030-31. Immense room for expansion is provided by India's relatively low per capita steel use and projected increase in usage arising from heightened infrastructural development and the booming automobile and railway industries.
Though, to achieve sustainable growth in the Indian steel landscape and to increase production capacity to 500 million tons (MT) by 2047, several critical success factors, enablers and building blocks are essential. Strong focus on R&D Innovation, Raw Material Security, Steel Decarbonization, Curbing Steel Imports and promoting specialty steel is an imperative to fulfil this aspiration.
To discuss the above and related issues, ASSOCHAM is organizing a ‘India Steel Conclave 2025 – Enhancing Steel Demand to 500 MT for Viksit Bharat’
