South Indian manufacturing industry at a glance:

The manufacturing sector in south India is well-established, thanks to the region's advantageous location, strong infrastructure, highly qualified labour force, and friendly business climate. With a broad spectrum of businesses from electronics and heavy industries to automobiles and textiles, south India's manufacturing sector is varied.

Key steel hubs in south India:

Bellary-Hospet: In Karnataka, this is a major steel and mining hub, especially for iron ore. Due to the region's rich iron ore reserves, numerous sizable steel factories and associated businesses have come up here. According to a BigMint study, Karnataka has an iron ore capacity of about 57.9 Mnt, and in FY 2425 about 40 Mnt was produced, approximately 15% of India's total iron ore production.

Chennai: A major industrial centre in South India, it contributes significantly to the production of steel. Chennai is primarily engaged in secondary steelmaking, steel processing, and the creation of steel products with added value which majorly serve infrastructure, automobiles, appliances, and construction sectors. Chennai Port imported approximately 1.5 million tonnes of ferrous scrap during FY'25.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, is a significant industrial hub in South India and is vital to the region's steel sector. Hyderabad's steel industry is mostly focused on secondary steel production, steel processing, and steel product manufacturing for a range of industries, including infrastructure, engineering, automotive, and construction.

Visakhapatnam: It is a major industrial center in south India, particularly for the steel sector. Known for its port, heavy industries, and advantageous location on India's east coast, Visakhapatnam is a major hub for the shipbuilding and steel industries. The pride of Visakhapatnam, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited also known as Vizag Steel has a crude steel capacity of 7.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

Outlook:

The steel demand outlook in south India is expected to remain robust on sustained government infra spending on modern highways and metro systems, affordable housing programmes, and the expansion of the automotive industry.
